Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 7,668 sheep comprising of 4,152 prime lambs and 3,516 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 14th November 2024.

A smaller offering of cast cows and bulls forward, yet a busy ringside of buyers ensured all classes met a brisk trade throughout. Top per head of £1,441 for an Angus from A Tullie Farming, Whitchester, Hawick with Beef Shorthorns to £1,377 and £1,278 shown by AJ Gibson Farming, Cut Thorn, Newcastle. Top per kilo of 212p from Whitchester and to 190p from Cut Thorn. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand here at Longtown.

A smaller show of 4,152 prime lambs, inline with national trends meeting a slight reduction on the week.

Heavy fed lambs and tidy export lambs are still in demand and wanted by purchaser request. Please do not hesitate to contact our auctioneers for up to date market trends.    

A Blackface lamb was kindly donated by Judith Hutchinson, Chapel Farm with the proceeds going to Children in Need. This lamb topped the sale at 428p and £150 being bought by Mr James Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers. Many thanks to everybody that was involved.

Out with the charity lamb the sale topped at 390p for a pen of handy weight Beltex lambs consigned by M/s Kennedy, Lurgan Farm, Perthshire.    

Top price per head of £200 on two separate occasions for Texel and Beltex lambs from R & WD & SR Charlton, Whiteside, Haltwhistle.

Overall average of 304.0p (SQQ 306.3p)

Easycare ewes sold to £142 from JD & GM Hay, Edingarioch, Aberdeen.  

Hill ewes topped at £125 of a pen of cheviot ewes consigned from M Macaulay, Tails of Watten, Wick.

Blackfaces ewes soared to £118 from CJ & NC Brodie, Allfornaught, Waterbeck and WL Patterson & Sons, Broomhope, Bellingham.

Rams to £250 for Texels from J Connell Farms, Wanton Walls, Lauder.
